Wound Care for Primary Practitioners

Wounds Canada has recently launched the Wounds Canada Institute (WCI), which offers a wide range of programs for health-care professionals (HCPs) who work with patients with or at risk for wounds. Wounds Canada Institute offers a wide range of educational programs to help you reach your full potential and fulfill your continuing education requirements. Regardless of your role in health care, you will find a program (that may include online modules, webinars, skills labs and/or live events) that suits your needs. The Wound Canada Institute, which builds on our decades of proven excellence as a provider of high-quality wound-related education, supports the learning needs and professional growth of HCPs in the areas of skin health and wound management. Learners can access online courses, webinars, hands-on skills labs and other live educational events. Prevention: Better care doesn’t mean more expenses The treatment of wounds costs millions of dollars each year in Canada and results in diminished quality of life for patients across the country. For example:
  • The prevalence of pressure injuries across all health-care settings is 26%, with almost 70% being preventable. It costs between $2,450 and $12,648 per month to treat these wounds.1
  • Persons with diabetes who have a foot ulcer are up to 40 times more likely to require a lower-leg amputation than the general population, resulting in a 5-year mortality rate of 50%.2
As a health-care decision-maker you understand how important it is to have well-trained and knowledgeable professionals who can prevent these and other types of wounds and to intervene as early as possible when wounds develop to both prevent patient suffering and save health-care dollars Features of WCI Programs
