Objectives
The climate crisis is the existential challenge of our time. Many nonprofits understand how urgently we must act, yet even mission-driven organizations continue to exclude digital sustainability from their scope of concern. While we think of the internet as an ethereal cloud, the reality is that it remains largely powered by fossil fuels. What's more, there are now an estimated 5 billion online users, putting the carbon emissions of our collective digital lives on par with those of the airline industry. This means that our digital lives are a rapidly growing (if still unacknowledged) contributor to global warming. Understanding the relationship between digital technology and climate emissions can be daunting, not to mention confusing. Yet it is one of the most immediate and powerful ways for organizations to make a difference. Digital sustainability is not simply a matter of emissions reduction, though. In order to be meaningful, digital transformation and digital sustainability agendas must align with new governance frameworks that are responsive to the challenges and complexities of the 21st century.
