 .2 FTE Sign Language Interpreter (Contract position)

The London Family Health Team offers high quality primary health care for its patients in London Ontario. An interprofessional group of health care practitioners, including family physicians, provide health care in an integrated, respectful and holistic environment. The focus of the family health team is on chronic disease management and prevention as well as health promotion. By working collaboratively, the team is able to provide a broad spectrum of primary health care services to its patients to ensure they get the care they need when they need it. The London Family Health Team is currently seeking a part time ASL-English Interpreter for 12-16 hours per week under the direction of the Psychologist whose practice focuses on children and adolescents. The incumbent will be responsible for American Sign Language interpretation for patients, physicians and staff. In addition, the incumbent will interpret in a diverse array of situations including meetings, assessments, feedback consultations and patient sessions. You will be located at our main site on Beaverbrook Avenue in northwest London. This position is under consideration for increased hours in the fall of 2014. Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s/Honours degree, preferably in Psychology
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English
  • Ability to adopt appropriate registers for various settings and completion of a recognized Sign Language Interpreting program
  • Member of AVLIC or equivalent (expertise in the AVLIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional conduct)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience interpreting in a high level professional setting; experience working in mental health settings
  • Familiarity with current research applications, therapeutic intervention techniques and technical vocabulary in psychology
  • Valid Ontario Drivers Licence and ability to travel
  • Strong interpersonal skills with cross cultural awareness and sensitivity
