Job Description
The ELFHT provides primary health care, including chronic disease management, health promotion, and disease prevention, to rostered and unrostered patients in the local community and surrounding area. It employs an interprofessional team of health care providers who work in a collaborative model of care.
The ELFHT is seeking a 1.0 FTE Registered Respiratory Therapist (37.5 hrs/week) to join its growing team of healthcare professionals. The position is for 5 days a week.
As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the Registered Respiratory Therapist's role is to deliver respiratory-related education to patients and staff of the ELFHT per the professional practice standards and code of ethics set out by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) as well as the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO). The RRT will provide expert assessments, education and treatment to various patient populations. There will be a focus on health promotion and disease prevention, education, self-management skills and encouragement for positive behaviour change for those with chronic cardiopulmonary disease.
This position requires travel and potentially work at two FHT sites, so the successful applicant must be able to travel and hold a valid driver’s license.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program.
- Registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO), in good standing,
- Certified Respiratory Educator (CRE) or in the process of completing CRE certification,
- Certified Tobacco Educator (CTE) or training in smoking cessation counselling from an accredited program (i.e., TEACH or Ottawa Model)
- Demonstrated competency in spirometry testing (per the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society standards)
- 2-4 years of experience working as an RRT is preferred
- Possess enthusiasm for working with patients across a broad spectrum of ages
- Ability and desire to develop new skills and evolve with a continuous improvement focus,
- Comply with current Privacy and Confidentiality Policies, as set out by the Privacy Commissioner via the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), to maintain the patient's trust.
- Critical thinking to identify the strengths and weakness of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems and provide possible differential diagnoses
- Ability to work independently and within a team environment providing interdisciplinary care
- Ability to be autonomous and function effectively with minimal supervision
- Proficiency with computers and electronic medical record systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performing diagnostic testing up to current clinical standards.
- Spirometry testing per ATS/ERS standards for diagnosis or monitoring.
- Oximetry testing
- Providing appropriate programming for chronic disease management or disease prevention:
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation in coordination with other healthcare providers
- Cardiopulmonary disease programs like those for asthma, COPD, Sleep Apnea or undiagnosed cough.
- Smoking cessation
- Providing appropriate services for chronic disease management or disease prevention:
- Perform respiratory assessments in conjunction with other team members if required.
- Facilitate and support appropriate referrals to other team members or within the community or beyond.
- Administration of appropriate respiratory vaccinations
- Facilitate and support appropriate quality of life/end-of-life decisions.
- Support and education for home device use
- Inventory control for appropriate equipment and educational materials.
- Maintain appropriate equipment to ensure quality control and safe use (e.g., calibration, cleaning, and ordering repairs).
- Maintain an organized appointment schedule.
- Maintain excellent communication methods with team members, external healthcare providers as appropriate, and the patient and their family.
