Registered Nurse - Couchiching FHT (Orillia)

Position:  Permanent Part-Time Registered Nurse – Teen Sexual Health (0.5FTE) Reports To:  Executive Director

Position Summary: As a key member of the Couchiching Family Health Team (CFHT), and an integral part of an interdisciplinary health care team, you will deliver nursing care in accordance with FHT policies and professional practice standards.  The RN is a sexual health service provider who operates independently in a variety of settings.   The RN will provide sexual health services to teens in the community. She/he will act as an advocate to directly increase access to sexual health services for patients.  The incumbent will ensure all clients experience personal growth, improved self-esteem, and will play a vital role in helping teens understand their sexuality including making responsible choices that will positively affect their future.  She/he will support teen pregnancy and encourage good parenting skills, and healthy families. Monitor and report risks for maternal complications such as anemia, hypertension, preeclampsia, preterm delivery, low birth weight and postpartum depression, all of which can have long term health consequences on both the mother and the child. Roles and Responsibilities
  • Utilise highly developed communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills which involve the discussion of complex issues and sharing delicate and highly personal information;
  • Communicate across language and cultural barriers with particular client groups, in partnership with available resources;
  • Promote sexual health and counsel to reduce risk taking behaviour;
  • Counsel patients in a non-directive and non-judgemental manner about all available pregnancy options in the case of an unintended pregnancy;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and primary care providers to ensure an integrated service provision;
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports for the Ministry Health and Long Term Care;
  • Provide basic prenatal care (BP check, urine dip, fetal heart rate check) to non-compliant pregnant patients who have not attended their family physician or obstetrician appointments, but encourage visits for subsequent prenatal appointments with their physicians;
  • Advocate for primary care when  public health services are limited (i.e. emergency contraception);
  • Liaison with community services and agencies to identify high risk teen pregnancies and teens who require pre and post-natal services;
  • Collaborate with the student, family, school staff, and medical providers to plan for the care and academic success of the student during pregnancy and after;
  • Identify community based and governmental resources (i.e. medical and mental health care specialists) and refer clients to and advocate for the acquisition of resources on their behalf;
  • Maintain and develop professional competence through ongoing professional development;
  • Stay current and aware of opportunities to implement new, evidence based methods of client assessment, treatment and programming;
  • Participate in clinical projects as appropriate; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills/Knowledge Requirements:
  • Knowledge of medical charting and use of electronic medical record to maintain confidential and secured recording of health counseling, case notes, and profiles;
  • Be able to work autonomously to provide a high standard of direct patient care, in outreach situations but have a clear understanding of clinical boundaries;
  • Empathetic. i.e. sexual assault, termination of pregnancy, dealing with HIV;
  • Skill in taking medical histories, assessing medical conditions, and interpreting findings;
  • Displays respect and caring in a professional manner to patients and coworkers;
  • Commitment to quality healthcare and excellent customer service;
  • Flexible to meet additional responsibilities as program demands;
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, teaching and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with patients, families, all levels of staff and the community;
  • Working knowledge of community resources;
  • Proven organizational, prioritization, and conflict management skills with the ability to work well in stressful situations;
  • Knowledge of infection control, universal precautions, safety, and patient confidentiality guidelines;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team; and
  • Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality.
Education/Specific Job Requirements:
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing;
  • Current certification of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario and membership in the RNAO and current B.C.L.S.;
  • Positive attendance and work record essential; and
  • Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, automobile insurance, and good driving record required for travel.
  • Clinical competence in nursing practice with 2-4 years recent experience working in a sexual health environment;
  • Experience teaching or counseling adolescents on topics such as pregnancy prevention, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and other related health and lifestyle topics; and
  • Demonstrated understanding of client-centred care including assessment, service coordination, and evaluation.
