AFHTO Members: Effective Governance for Quality in Primary Care

The Governance for Quality in Primary Care workshops are now accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Ontario Chapter for up to 5 Mainpro-M1 credits.

AFHTO is pleased to offer the following two workshops free of charge to AFHTO member board members, executive directors and lead clinicians:

Workshop #1: Wednesday March 25th from 10:30 to 4:30pm

  • Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Toronto International Airport (skywalk connects the hotel to Terminal 3)

Workshop #2: Monday March 30th from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm

  • Eaton Chelsea Hotel, 33 Gerrard Street West Toronto, Ontario (Next to Eaton Centre- closest subway station Yonge-Dundas/College)

Effective Governance for Quality in Primary Care is an evidence-based training program for FHTs and NPLCs, delivered by peer leaders from these organizations. The program, created by the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), has been customized to Ontario’s primary care organizations in partnership with the MOHLTC, the Association of Family Health Teams of Ontario (AFHTO), the Association of Ontario Health Centres (AOHC), the Nurse Practitioner’s Association of Ontario (NPAO).

Last year, 4 work shops were held and attended by leaders from 89 AFHTO member organizations; each work shop was rated as “valuable” and “extremely valuable” on all feedback forms.  In the words of one participant: “Very helpful sessions. I enjoy attending AFHTO led sessions as they guide our learning and work. I am leaving with several new ideas to bring back to the board to hopefully implement”.

Who should attend?

The sessions are intended for board members, executive directors and quality improvement leaders in AFHTO’s member organizations.

What are the unique benefits of this workshop?

Boards are responsible for the performance of their organization, and this workshop will help board members understand how to perform their duties to the benefit of everyone involved, particularly patients. The workshops have been customized for the primary care sector, but more importantly are delivered by FHT and NPLC peer leaders who speak about and address our specific governance issues. The workshops will also be customized to ensure that board members and leaders understand their role with respect to the quality and data improvement work lead by the Quality Improvement Decision Support (QIDS) program. With the help of our peer facilitators, you will learn about the following subjects among others – roles, skills and knowledge, developing and maintaining relationships, culture, quality improvement planning and information and measurement. Case studies and reviews of best practices are included.

How do I register?

Program registration is free of charge and open to board members, executive directors and lead clinicians of all AFHTO member organizations. It is recommended that each organization send more than one board member to the program to fully benefit from the training.
