Psychologist (0.5 FTE)

Position Profile

As a key member of the South East Toronto Family Health Team (SETFHT), and an integral part of our Mental Health Team, the Psychologist will function in close collaboration with all physicians and Interprofessional health care providers within the FHT. The Psychologist will provide clinical services in conjunction with all health care services to children and adults within a family context. The role includes both the provision of direct patient care as well as assisting in the development of programs, resources and the creation of linkages within the FHT and the community.

Accountability

The Psychologist reports to, and is responsible to, the SETFHT Executive Director. All clinical decision making outside the scope of the Psychologist must be done in consultation with the SETFHT Lead Physician and/or physicians of SETFHT and/or sessional psychiatrists.

Authority

Does not direct the activities of staff or a function without direction of FHT decision makers. The Psychologist will practice to his/her full scope of practice as defined by the College of Psychologists of Ontario.

Decision Making

On a regular and continuous basis, exercises clinical judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the FHT.

Roles and Responsibilities

Assessment

  • Assessment and diagnosis of the functioning and mental health status of individuals and families related to mental disorders.
  • Assessment of client status is inclusive of comprehensive contextual understanding (e.g. race, culture, religion, socio-economic position, family and support systems, sexual orientation, gender identity, psychological outlook, housing, financial and legal needs).

Treatment/Management

  • Design and implement treatment programs and Interventions for individuals (child and adult) and families. A strong focus and interest in working with the child and family is critical in this position.
  • Conduct psychological assessment as required and intensive, behavioural and/or cognitive psychotherapies.
  • Use of appropriate behaviour, cognitive or other therapies in the treatment of mental health disorders.
  •  Treatment of individual and family relationship problems.
  • Management of psychological factors and problems associated with physical conditions and disease, terminal and chronic illnesses.
  • Pain management using appropriate treatment strategies.
  • Assist patients to manage lifestyle issues and stressors.
  • Treatment of problems associated with cognitive functioning.

Education/Advocacy

  • Implementation of primary and secondary prevention strategies.
  • Program development and evaluation. Interest in quality improvement and measuring patient outcomes.
  • Professional guidance and support to referrers and colleagues.

Referrals

  • Collaborative consultation relating to the assessment of, or intervention with individuals and groups to facilitate referral to community agencies/services.

Interprofessional Collaboration

  • Develop and hone collaborative community relationships to facilitate patient access to services upon physician/health care team requests.
  • Communicate ideas or concerns to the health care team. Participate in problem solving to enhance patient care.
  • Work closely with and support colleagues on the Mental Health Team, including attending bi-weekly meetings with the team and consulting on complex patients.
  • Assist in the training and development of new staff. Participate in clinical supervision of colleagues/peers as necessary.

 Qualifications

  • Current registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
  • Professional liability insurance.
  • Demonstrated skill in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of mental health disorders of children and adults.
  • Educational and treatment group facilitation skills.
  • Experience in treatment of individual and family relationship problems.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced decision making, problem identification and problem solving skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • The ability to work as part of a team in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Knowledge of and working experience with computer systems and applications.

This is a part-time permanent position, working 18.75 hours/2.5 days a week. There is flexibility in terms of which days worked.  This position will work out of both our 840 Coxwell Avenue and 1871 Danforth Avenue clinics.

Compensation is based on experience and guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for this role. Position includes enrolment in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan and 4% pay in lieu of benefits.
