Mobile Diagnostic Unit Pilot Program

Full-time 1 year term position, 37.5   hours / week, 9am – 5:30pm – 1 hour unpaid lunch break.  It is approved as a one year pilot project, with a possibility to be extended by either a second year or eventually made permanent at the Ministry of Health’s and Family First FHT sole discretion.

The Mobile Diagnostic Unit will serve the communities of Orleans, Blackburn Hamlet and Orleans.  The unit will be comprised of a RPN and a NP; who together will make up to 8 visits a day in homes of patients who are medically immobile.  The unit will provide primary care service including post-hospital discharge follow-up visits, chronic disease management visits, preventative care visits including diagnosis, treatment and diagnostics testing.  The unit will not provide palliative care visits or emergency response.    The unit will coordinate with and be supported by the patient’s primary care doctor.

The RPN duties will include:

  • Maintain the medical equipment and supply of the MDU so the unit is ready and serviceable for assessments.
  • Coordinate the vehicle maintenance with the dealership.
  • Maintain the vehicle in terms of gas, fluids, winter clearing.
  • Be responsible for driving, navigating and way finding to appointments.
  • Provide diagnostic services to patients including BP, phlebotomy, spirometry, ECG.
  • Provide dressing and packing services to patients at the direction of the NP.
  • When necessary help the NP adjust patient position for assessment.
  • Provide common primary care nursing services including immunization, ear flushes.
  • Work effectively as a team with the NP to provide the services of the Mobile Diagnostic Unit.

The ideal RPN candidate must:

  • Be fluently bilingual in English and French for verbal and written communication, for this position a unilingual candidate will not be considered.
  • Must be currently licensed in good standing in Ontario as a RPN.
  • Have more than 5 years clinical experience as an RPN in Canada with adult populations.
  • Have practical experience in primary care assessment, treatment and diagnostics.
  • Have practical experience in preventative care screening and knowledge of evidence based guidelines for Preventive Care,
  • Experience in counseling patients in regards to blood glucose management, diabetic foot care is preferred.
  • High achiever that is highly organized and efficient; able to maintain happily the standard of 8 home visits at day with visits less than 10km apart from each other.
  • Can work independently and conscientiously to achieve goals.
  • Are details oriented, conscientious and careful to avoid errors?
  • Can take and give feedback that is constructive and respectful.

Compensation: $45,000 annually + HOOPP, 75% Medical Benefits, Health Spending Account
